Let’s dive in!
At Sandi Studio, we understand that every photoshoot, whether it’s capturing family portraits or celebrating children’s milestones, is truly about your child. They are the heart of the experience, and the memories we preserve depend on their comfort and happiness. So, how can you ensure a fantastic experience for both the children and the parents?
First and foremost, relax! Don’t let the idea of a photoshoot overwhelm you. We want this to be a joyful occasion for everyone. A positive attitude sets the stage for a wonderful family photography experience.
We believe every photoshoot should be a celebration of your family’s unique bond. It’s about capturing not just your faces, but the love, laughter, and connection you share. Genuine smiles and authentic emotions are the magic ingredients that make photographs truly special.
How do we create a relaxed and fun atmosphere?
We prioritize smiles, playfulness, and giving children the space to be themselves. Imagine arriving at a new environment and immediately having to pose for the camera… not very comfortable, is it?
Everyone, especially children, needs time to adjust. They might explore the studio, ask questions, and get acquainted with the photographer. This usually takes around 10-15 minutes. In our Poundbury studio, we encourage children to relax and get comfortable before we begin.
For children experiencing their first photoshoot, everything is a fascinating novelty. Even returning families will find something new to discover, from props, toys and backdrops to different lighting setups. Some children remember their last visit and eagerly anticipate the new adventure, while others are captivated by the cameras and studio equipment. This curiosity is perfectly natural, especially since they don’t encounter these things every day.
During your session, we offer plenty of freedom, even within planned setups. This allows us to capture genuine moments, those sparkling smiles, and the pure joy of children at play. At Sandi Studio Photography, we believe in capturing authentic interactions and expressions. Of course, we’ll also gently guide them into some posed shots for variety.
Outdoor photoshoots offer a completely different experience. Without the studio setting, there’s a sense of freedom and natural beauty. Children often warm up quickly in this environment, running, playing, and interacting with their surroundings while the photographer captures those carefree moments.
The most important thing? Children don’t need to be perfect posers to have a wonderful photoshoot. We want them to feel happy, safe, and comfortable. Natural smiles are always the most beautiful.
It’s important to remember that children, like all of us, have good days and not-so-good days. They might be tired, under the weather, or simply not in the mood for photos. That’s perfectly fine. We have a toolbox of tricks at the studio – toys, snacks, and a warm, friendly atmosphere – to help them relax and have fun. And if it’s just not their day, rescheduling is always an option. Never pressure a child into a photoshoot; it’s crucial to listen to their cues and offer choices. If a studio session feels overwhelming, an outdoor photoshoot might be a better fit.
What are the key ingredients for a successful children’s photoshoot?
Relaxed parents: When parents are stressed, children often mirror those feelings. Remember, a photoshoot should be an enjoyable experience, and we’re happy to reschedule if needed. So, take a deep breath, smile, and let the good times roll! Often, parents start a little nervous but end up having the most fun!
Preparation: Before your session, talk to your children about where they’re going, who they’ll meet, and what they’ll be doing. Children of all ages appreciate knowing what to expect. For example:
“Tomorrow, we’re going to a photography studio. The photographer will show us around. There will be cameras, lights, and lots of fun things to play with! It’s going to be a great time!”
You could even show them a video of a photoshoot to help them visualize the experience.
What to bring to your photoshoot:
- A favourite toy or cuddly companion: This can provide comfort and even help with getting their attention.
- Snacks: Pack some of your child’s favourite snacks to keep those energy levels up and smiles bright.
- Essentials: Tissues, nappies, and a dummy (if needed).
- A change of clothes: Accidents happen, so it’s always wise to have a spare outfit on hand.
- Comfort items: For babies and toddlers, a blanket and pillow can provide extra comfort.
- Plain socks: Not all children like having bare feet, so pack some socks just in case.
- Sunscreen: If you’re having an outdoor photoshoot, don’t forget the sunscreen!
- Most importantly: Your smiles! Relax, have fun, and enjoy creating beautiful memories together.
This advice and these tips are primarily for family and children’s photoshoots. Newborn photography sessions and Fine Art children’s sessions have their own unique considerations. We’ll be sharing tips for those in a future blog post.
See you soon!
